Combat

Combat in Survival Horror mode is much faster, more visceral, and less tactical. Enemies generally have very little sense of self-preservation, and may in fact be completely unarmored. This means that modern weapons will kill them in one hit most of the time.

AMBUSH

When combat begins, it’s usually an ambush or a surprise of some kind. Each character gets a chance to take 1 shot when the enemies appear. The GM will tell you how close the enemy that’s gunning for your character is.

Slower/larger weapons like assault rifles, sniper rifles, and heavy weapons will be harder to bring to bear, taking an accuracy penalty, unless the enemy is far away.

Fast weapons like Shotguns and Pistols will suffer the reverse penalty, they are harder to aim in bad conditions against a foe far away, but are easy to bring to bear on a close-in foe.

Altering how the characters are arranged as they move through the area can help ensure that people with big, powerful weapons don’t get caught off-guard. Establishing a perimeter of people with smaller weapons around those with the larger ones can help. Or those with larger weapons can walk drag, which makes them vulnerable to rear-ambush but in most situations will give them the distance they need.

Chaotic Melee

After the initial shooting, combat is generally close-quarters. Larger weapons will be difficult to use, and Melee attacks will be very good. Another round of just 1 roll per character will usually be enough to finish this. Initiative is based on how well the party did in the first round. If few of the hostiles were cleared out, then the party will be behind, and the enemies will get their chances first. Alternately, a good first round gives some breathing space for a quick finish on the second.

Biotics and Tech

Biotic and tech powers are very powerful against disorganized, unarmored foes. However, throwing a tech grenade or making a biotic gesture is a lot slower than just snapping off a single shot with a ready weapon. Using Tech or Biotic powers on the Ambush round means that the power actually activates on the beginning of the Melee round.

Using a Biotic or Tech power during the Melee round means it activates at the end of that round, which can be useful for cleanup.
